Quantifying Mesophotic Fish Assemblages of Hawai‘i’s Au‘au Channel: Associations With Benthic Habitats and Depth

Mesophotic reefs (30–150 m) occur in the tropics and subtropics at depths beyond most scientific diving, thereby making conventional surveys challenging. Towed cameras, submersibles, mixed-gas divers were used to survey mesophotic reef fish assemblages benthic substrates of Au‘au Channel, between Hawaiian Islands Maui Lāna‘i. Non-parametric multivariate analysis: Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS), Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), Multi-Response Permutation Procedure (MRPP), Indicator Species (ISA) determine association species with depth. Between 53 115-m depths, 82 10 genera observed together types substrate. Eight ( Apolemichthys arcuatus , Centropyge potteri, Chaetodon kleinii, Chromis leucura, verater, Forcipiger sp., Naso hexacanthus Parupeneus multifasciatus ) positively associated increasing depth, Leptoseris sp. coral cover, hard-bottom one Oxycheilinus bimaculatus was Halimeda algae cover. Fish rubble not significantly different from those sand, Montipora beds beds, but distinct hard bottom. The patterns data suggested two depth assemblages, “upper mesophotic” 95 m other deeper, possibly part a “lower assemblage 96 115 edge rariphotic bottomfish complex.
